Crime prevention takes center stage in meeting with Sen. London Lamar, Shelby delegation and Gov. Bill Lee
Senator seeks to build on reforms with Memphis leaders, state officials
NASHVILLE — Tennessee Sen. London Lamar, D-Memphis, advocated for crime prevention strategies in Memphis during a meeting between members of the Shelby County legislative delegation and Gov. Bill Lee.
Crime is a key issue in Memphis and greater Shelby County following a spate of high-profile killings.
“Shelby County families have a right to feel safe from crime and violence in our community,” said Sen. Lamar. “I believe we can achieve that goal by working together with a focus on both accountability and prevention.”
Sen. Lamar, who serves as chairwoman of the Shelby County legislative delegation, believed it was important to convene a meeting with the governor’s office to share ideas, strengthen programs that are working and identify new areas for collaboration. She will report her findings back to Memphis city leaders.
“If we want to keep our families safe, we need to make sure that people who commit crimes are held accountable while also doing everything we can to prevent crime from happening in the first place,” Sen. Lamar said.
