Democratic leaders applaud court decision ruling ‘gerrymandered’ Senate map unconstitutional
NASHVILLE — A Tennessee court issued an opinion today ruling the Republican-drawn state Senate map unconstitutional. A voter in Davidson County challenged the 2022 law setting district lines after the legislature enacted a map that ignored the Tennessee Constitution’s provision on consecutive numbering.
In its ruling, the court ordered the legislature to enact a constitutional map by the end of January.
In a joint statement, Senate Minority Leader Sen. Raumesh Akbari and Chairwoman Sen. London Lamar affirmed the Democratic caucus’s commitment to legal and fair maps.
Joint Statement:
“Today’s court ruling against the gerrymandered state Senate map is a clear win for the Tennessee Constitution. Even when a political party has a supermajority in the legislature, its members must still follow the law.
“In the days ahead, Senate Democrats will once again be advocating for a fair map and transparent process that keeps communities whole and reflects who we are as a state.”
