Sen. Charlane Oliver invites Nashvillians to discuss gun safety, third grade retention and other issues
Public encouraged to make their voices heard at Senate District 19 Town Hall series
NASHVILLE — Sen. Charlane Oliver, D-Nashville, will host her first-ever series of Senate public town hall meetings across Nashville next week to hear from residents on state issues spanning gun violence and children’s services to Gov. Bill Lee’s third-grade retention law.
Sen. Oliver will kick off her three-stop District 19 Town Hall tour Monday in North Nashville and continue throughout the district through Wednesday, providing an open platform for residents to discuss new laws, voice their concerns and share their ideas for a better, more prosperous community.
The District 19 Town Hall tour will address a wide range of topics including: a legislative update; education and the third-grade retention law; transportation and the new road building program; children’s services and the relative caregiver assistance program; as well as gun safety and the upcoming special session.
Representatives from the state departments of transportation, education and children’s services will also be on hand to provide legislative updates and answer questions.
“We’ve had a tumultuous year at the legislature and the outcomes can seem dismal for working class families,” Sen. Oliver said. “I’m hosting these town halls because Tennesseans in blue cities like Nashville deserve to know that Democrats passed good, bipartisan bills, stood up against extreme and harmful legislation, and are pushing for a special session to pass meaningful gun safety measures.”
Tennessee Senate District 19 includes parts of North Nashville, East Nashville, Madison, and parts of the Antioch area in Southeast Davidson County.
All residents of Tennessee Senate District 19 are encouraged to attend and participate in one of the town halls. The public will have an opportunity to engage in conversations with Sen. Oliver, state officials and fellow community members.
Details for the inaugural town hall meeting are as follows:
- Monday, June 12, 6 p.m. — Lee Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church at 1200 Dr. DB Todd Blvd
- Tuesday, June 13, 6 p.m. — East Park Community Center at 600 Woodland St
- Wednesday, June 14, 6 p.m. — Southeast Community Center at 5260 Hickory Hollow Parkway
