Sen. Gilmore presses for Forrest bust removal

NASHVILLE — Sen. Brenda Gilmore (D-Nashville) is urging members of the Capitol Commission to remove a bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest from the state Capitol.
Gilmore, a long-time Middle Tennessee lawmaker, along with many Democratic members of the General Assembly have been advocating for the Nathan Bedford Forrest bust to be moved to a museum.
The panel, which oversees the Capitol grounds, will vote on the matter Thursday, July 9.
On Monday, Gilmore wrote a letter to members of the commission asking them to “make Thursday a moment in Tennessee history where we stood together for racial reconciliation.”
