MEMPHIS — Sen. Raumesh Akbari, the chairwoman of the Senate Democratic Caucus, issued a statement today marking the anniversary of the MAGA attack on the U.S. capitol.

“My hope for this dark anniversary is that we can reconcile and move forward together as a country. But reconciliation and healing only happens when we all can acknowledge January 6th for what it was: an unacceptable attack on our democracy. The people responsible for this act of violence, which left five police officers dead, must be held accountable.

“January 6th was the violent consequence of spreading the lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Now, the extremism that fueled the Big Lie has polluted our politics so thoroughly that some people choose outrage over facts — no matter the cost. That’s a race to the bottom, where we all lose.

“There’s nothing more important to the future of our country than our shared American values. If America wants to continue as a beacon of hope to the world, we cannot let extremists win. We cannot let lies defeat truth. I pray for unity, one people, working together, to redeem the soul of our nation.”
