NASHVILLE — Senate minority leader Sen. Raumesh Akbari, D-Memphis, marked the first anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the Roe v. Wade decision with a fresh commitment to advance reproductive rights.

The Supreme Court issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on June 24, 2022.

Sen. Raumesh Akbari:

“Democrats believe women deserve the same freedoms as men, including the right to make a personal medical decision about our reproductive healthcare — without interference from a government mandate.

“Since the Dobbs decision a year ago, Tennessee Republicans have enacted one of the most extreme abortion bans in the nation. Their laws rob women of autonomy they’ve had for generations and criminalize the procedure even in cases of rape, incest and when a woman’s health is in danger.

“At the same time, Democrats in Tennessee have dedicated ourselves to expanding access to reproductive healthcare and restoring the rights we had under Roe.

“We know Tennessee families will reject this radical, Republican intrusion into our personal lives because these are decisions that should be made by a woman, her family and her doctor, not politicians. Democrats are committed to fighting tooth and nail for freedom from these bans.”
