MEMPHIS — Tennessee Sen. Raumesh Akbari, D-Memphis, is encouraging Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty to support the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

President Joe Biden announced his intention to nominate Judge Brown Jackson this week. She currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals and would be the first Black woman to serve as a justice.

Statement from Sen. Akbari:

“As a black woman and a lawyer, the nomination of Judge Jackson is a dream realized!

“I remember visiting the U.S. Supreme Court in eighth grade and thinking about the possibility of someone who looked like me sitting on the nation’s high court. Today, President Biden has brought us one step closer to making it happen.

“Judge Brown Jackson is a preeminently qualified jurist with nearly unmatched professional credentials. I encourage Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty to support a fair and timely hearing and vote for her historic confirmation.”

In his announcment, President Biden said Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson “is one of our nation’s brightest legal minds and will be an exceptional Justice.”

Judge Brown Jackson has devoted the majority of her career to serving the public — as a U.S. Sentencing Commission lawyer and commissioner; as a federal public defender; and as a federal judge.

Judge Jackson currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

From 2013 to 2021, she served as a United States District Judge for the District of Columbia. She has been confirmed by the Senate on a bipartisan basis three times — twice as judge and once to serve on the U.S. Sentencing Commission.
