We stand here today, with hearts full of joy and hope, to celebrate a historic milestone in Tennessee’s journey towards racial equality and justice. The passage of the law that officially recognizes Juneteenth as a state holiday is a moment of tremendous significance, marking a step forward in acknowledging the profound impact of slavery and the enduring struggle for freedom.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States, specifically recognizing June 19th, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the end of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the long road to liberation and the resilience of those who fought against the shackles of bondage.

By designating Juneteenth as an official state holiday, Tennessee takes a powerful stride towards recognizing the contributions, struggles, and resilience of African Americans throughout history. It signifies a commitment to honor the triumphs and challenges faced by the Black community, ensuring that their stories and experiences are woven into the fabric of our shared heritage.

However, as we celebrate this milestone, we must also recognize that our work is far from over. This momentous occasion must serve as a call to action, reminding us that true racial justice and equality have not yet been fully realized. We must continue our collective efforts to dismantle systemic racism and create a society where every individual is treated with dignity, respect, and equity.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, let us not forget the painful chapters of our history, but let us also embrace the opportunity for growth, healing, and progress. Let us strive to learn from the past and build a future where justice prevails, where the bonds of unity and understanding transcend the barriers that have divided us for far too long.

Today, we stand united in celebration, recognizing the importance of Juneteenth as an official state holiday in Tennessee. Let us carry the spirit of this day forward, fostering empathy, education, and dialogue to build bridges of understanding and empathy.

Together, we can create a society where the values of freedom, equality, and justice resonate in the lives of every Tennessean and beyond.

There is still work to be done, but today, we take a monumental step towards a more inclusive and just society. Happy Juneteenth, Tennessee!

Sen. Raumesh Akbari, D-Memphis, is the Senate minority leader. This year she successfully co-sponsored legislation to make Juneteenth an official state holiday.
